Happy New Year to all my readers! Although, I must admit that the
“happy” and the exclamation mark in my greetings don’t really belong,
considering that almost 400 Gazans have been murdered and approximately
1,600 injured to date.

I could probably venture a very safe bet that half, if not more, of the United States’ population has no clue of what is happening right now in Gaza. Consumed by post-Christmas festivities and New Years’ preparations, very few people take the time to read the newspaper or listen to the morning news. Even fewer follow up with what happens outside the borders of the North American continent.
I’d like to apologize for the delay in getting something out to my
readers. Finals have been consuming my life, but now Alhamdulillah, I
have three free weeks to read, relax, and write.
As my winter break between classes began, I got the most peculiar
email titled, “Bush Dodges Iraqi Journalist’s Shoes.” Before opening
the email, I immediately thought that this would be a Comedy Central or
Saturday Night Live spoof. Instead, I opened up the attached video,
only to watch a news piece of an Iraqi journalist throwing both pairs
of his shoes at President George W. Bush. And no, it wasn’t some corny
April Fools’ joke.
Of course, anyone and everyone will be blogging,
writing, speaking, and thinking about the victory of President-elect Barack
Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America. I’d like to begin by
congratulating you all. Last night’s victory was truly a historic moment and it
opened up the doors of the presidency to a people who have been systematically
discriminated against throughout the majority of their history here in the United
States.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu Dear Readers!!!
May Peace and Blessings Be Upon All Of You
I’m
so sorry that I haven’t been writing lately. School started, and with
all the new classes, work, and responsibilities, it took quite a while
to balance everything and get back to my normal schedule. I was
studying for my AlMaghrib test on the Seerah of the Prophet (S) and I
came across a very interesting story, a story that reminded me of many
things that are happening today. Let me relay the story to you first,
and then I’ll tell you what I thought of when I first read it.

I apologize beforehand for the longer entry today. But no matter
how much I write and how long this entry is, it will never be enough to
speak about our beloved Prophet (S).
This past weekend, I took my first AlMaghrib class [http://www.almaghrib.org]
on the life of the Prophet Muhammad (S), a class titled, “The
Shepherd’s Path.” I still have another weekend to go in order to
complete the class, but I can honestly say that this class has been one
of the most inspirational and interesting Islamic classes that I’ve
ever taken. I thought I’d share a bit of reflections on what we talked
about, as well as share a poem that I wrote [it was also inspired by
the class].
I was reading the news on my laptop one morning and I came across an article about the hijabis, women who wear the hijab [Muslim
women's dress of modesty], who are participating in the Olympics.
Throughout the article, all the athletes stressed the fact that the hijab was
never constricting for them; in fact, more often than not it
unfalteringly proved to be empowering. Upon reading various quotes from
the women who expressed these sentiments, I smiled and thought back to
my personal experiences. The experiences of a young Muslim woman who
has been wearing the hijab for the past five years.

Activism is so refreshing; it really is. And it makes me extremely
happy to be surrounded by activists everywhere. If you’re sitting
there thinking..”I’m not an activist, why should I even continue
reading this?” I think you’re wrong. Because more likely than not, you
are an activist. You’re an activist if you read, listen, or watch the
news. You’re an activist if you care about others. You’re an activist
if you do little things, like recycle, carpool, and smile in people’s
faces. You’re an activist because everything you do is actively
changing the world.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu Dear Readers
Peace Be Upon All of You!!!
I write to you from my beloved Egypt and I’m quite happy to say that all the comments and thoughts from my last blog stand true. Never have I seen more generous and selfless people. And I’m really proud and honored that these men, women, and children are both Egyptian and many of them, Muslim.
But today, I’m choosing to digress a bit and speak to you about something I mentioned in my introductory blog.
